Fishing for fish that actually eat aka NOT LAKE ANNA....

Weather: 35-50, Sunny, Post-Frontal
Water: Clear, 4-5'viz, 43-45 degrees
Wind: 5-10

I fished the James today but unfortunately my netman/co-angler was not able to make it. I also had to dig deep and pick up some minnows as my "co-angler." The cleaner the water the better the bite becomes on live bait. I managed 6 fish today with 5 coming on live bait. All fish were caught between 8-12 feet. These fish are brutes regardless of size, they put largemouth to shame. My best 5 were between 16-17lbs.

Twins, 2-8 & 2-12

I'm not a hug fan of livebait, however on this part of the James when the water is clean you don't have much choice if you want to catch fish. It is definately the original cheater rig, but the fish still fight the same.

What type and size hooks do you use for those? Nice fish by the way regardless of live bait

JayT

the livebait fish were a 1/0 Owner Mosquito live bait hook, its basically a half circle.

If they are like a half circle do they act like circle hooks and not gut hook them? I would like to float some minnows on the New River and always fear gut hooking fish

JayT

yep, shouldn't have to worry about gut hooking, every fish was hooked in the top or corner of their mouth

There is also no delay in "setting the hook". Once that bobber goes down reel up the slack and lean on them, they will hook themselves and enjoy the fight.

Did you already own bobbers or did you have to buy those to?...lol
