Default Shad are here, James 3/23/12

Hit Ancrarrows on the James. Place was mobbed as expected. I got there at the end of low tide, guys coming in did quite well with the shad. An occassional tiny striper mixed in. I got about a dozen shad, a few white perch, and 2 tiny stripers. I tried with rattletraps, crank, and umbrella rig for stripers but no luck. Water was 67 or so, was sunny 85 degree day.....

Thanks for the report, JF. I have an 8 year old who always looks forward to this time of year for just this reason.
I assume you went up the river towards the 95 bridge? any further up? Darts or spoons or both?
Looks like with the rain this weekend, and the flood stage predicted, we might have to wait till at least this coming weekend to get out.
    Tight lines!

We went past 95 bridge near railroad bridge. I don't have much luck with darts. I use tiny chartreuse grubs 1/32 or 1/16th ounce, with a few splitshots a foot above grub.

Hey Joe you should try a dart with about 18" of leader to a spoon. We catch tons of them off the bank just below the Mayo Bridge in front of Southern States with them.

Yeah, that is the area I fish. I tried darts and spoons last year but my grub out fished em for some reason. Will be there Thursday, get some shad, maybe a striper if they start coming in....

You guys get any American Shad down there? I get a lot of Hickories near my house on the Potomac, but for some reason no Americans. I think I fish too far upstream.

I went out few days ago. We only caught a different kind of shad, assume it was the American Shad, had a blunter head and a rounder body. Only got 3, mostly foul hooked. water was muddy and high. Did get some catfish too.....
