    Default Youth Day

My 12 year old son didn't want to get up Saturday morning early so we didn't go in the morning. We ended up going fishing later in the morning until about 4:00. Had a pretty good day. While we were in the house my wife looks out back and sees a turkey in the field. I get the binos and take a look and it's a nice gobbler. Jake wants to go after him so we get our camo on and head out. The turkey had gone around a corner heading to the back field feeding so we snuck up the tree line to where we first saw him. I caught a glimpse of him towards the back about 100 yards away so I got Jake set up next to a pine and I got in some brush about 10 yards behind him. I made a couple soft calls with a box then a couple more with a slate and nothing. It was windy so I thought maybe he didn't hear me. I pulled the box back out and made a few yelps but a little louder and he gobbled. I told Jake he knows were here. I waited a few minutes and called again and he gobbled again and was closer. I did some scratching in the leaves and waited a few more minutes then called again. He gobbled before I even finished calling and was only about 60-70 yards away. I told Jake to get ready he was coming. The bird came around the point of the woods and was in full strut at 50 yards. He was slowly making his way to us and at this point Jake was on his own. Jake let the gobbler get to about 30 yards and when he had a good shot at his head he took the shot. BOOM... and the turkey started flopping around. He made a great shot and now had his first ever Spring Gobbler! What an exciting hunt! I could feel my heart beating out of my chest waiting for him to shoot. Jake said he was pretty calm until he heard the bird gobble the first time. He did great though and I'm real proud of him! The brid weighed 20 lbs 3 oz. It had a 10 1/2" beard and 1" spurs. Now I have a turkey and a deer at the taxidermist. Anyone have a good rate on a loan? LOL
