    Default Side scan beam coverage.

Question for my side scan guru friends. When side scanning, the screen image has the area under the boat blackened out with images left and right. After looking and researching the beam angles it appears the darkened area on the screen is an area under the boat thats not being scanned using side scan. To see this area you need to be using the down scan in conjunction with side scan for a complete picture of what your seeing left, right and center. Would this be a true statement?

The dark area is the water. The distance from center line (line on which the boat is traveling) to the edge of the images left and right is the depth at the point directly under the 'ducer. Running a split screen - side and down scan - is a good way of tracking detail directly under and to the side of the boat simultaneously.

When you pass directly over a subject, it should be displayed on both sides and in the water column like this tree on a brush pile:

Is that a HB pic, or lowrance? HB uses two crystals in the transducer, and lowrance uses three, two for side scan and one dedicated for down scan. Or does it matter? Thanks Wayne.

That is Humminbird Side Imaging with a 1198c SI Combo that has the two SI crystals and a 2D crystal, and no Down Imaging crystal.

My Humminbird ONIX SI has a dedicated Down Imaging crystal in the Side Imaging transducer with a 2D crystal and does the same thing.

Structure Scan should do the same.

Correct you are using two parts to side scan, the darker image under the boat is using your down imaging and where the image stops. Anytime you have an object that comes directly underneath the boat the image will be reflected on both sides of the boat.
